Greenhouses located in Gebze, which supply vegetables to Istanbul, serve as employment opportunities for 2,000 farmers

The recent completion of the glass greenhouse project in Sivas, set to employ 100 individuals, marks a significant milestone. Farmers from Ovacık, Kadıllı, Cumaköy, and Denizli villages, who cultivate crops in greenhouses year-round, are bolstering the economic growth of the region alongside industrial enterprises known for their substantial investments.

During a season, out of the 300 tons of fresh vegetables dispatched from Kocaeli, 100 tons are harvested in Gebze and distributed to the market in Kadıköy, Istanbul. Additionally, greenhouse producers contribute to the regional economy through social media sales and direct field and greenhouse harvests.

Ayhan Pekşen, Chairman of the Gebze Chamber of Agriculture, mentioned that their primary market is Istanbul, although they supply to other markets as well. He highlighted the absence of market issues and production shortages, pinpointing labor shortage as the primary challenge. Plans are underway to address this issue through discussions with governmental authorities.

Pekşen elaborated on greenhouse yields, indicating that approximately 6-7 tons of tomatoes, 5 tons of cucumbers, and 3 tons of peppers are produced in a greenhouse within a four-month period. He emphasized that around 1,500-2,000 people from four villages sustain their livelihoods through greenhouse farming.

Moreover, Temel Fidan, Director of the Agricultural Services Branch of the Metropolitan Municipality's Department of Mukhtar Affairs, noted that among the 7,000 greenhouses in Kocaeli, 4,500 are located in Gebze. The municipality supports farmers by providing modern equipment, seedlings, and seeds, as well as aiding in resolving market and agricultural irrigation issues.

Şaban Özyurt, a local farmer with 20 greenhouses and 50 acres of open-field agriculture, highlighted the diverse range of crops they cultivate. He emphasized the need for timely intervention to ensure optimal yields, particularly in greenhouse cultivation, where temperature control is crucial for crop success.
